We've set our clocks back an hour and the sun is rising and setting earlier. With this little change it becomes harder and harder to stay motivated to keep our daily routine. We wake up, go to work, and by the time we get home, the sun has set and your body is ready for bed. We come up with so many excuses to not keep up with our everyday exercises, chores, and family activities. By setting a few guidelines, planning family outings and eating right, your post-daylight savings time blues will quickly disappear.

Stick to Your Agenda

As the days grow shorter our daily routine seems to fall by the wayside. This may be due to reduced hours of sunlight which can cause a lack of motivation--or just plain laziness. The best way to keep the whole family focused is to write out a schedule and live by it, literally! By setting a daily regimen for the whole family, you’ll notice how efficiently things get done around the house. Get a large weekly calendar and place it somewhere where the family can see it every day. Map out tasks for each individual, list what time the task needs to be done, and set a reward for that task. By visualizing your agenda and setting up incentives, you’ll be surprised how quickly household tasks are accomplished.

Get Out and Play

Even though there are only about 10 hours of light each day, we need to make an effort to get out and stay active. Most of us are not early risers (especially teenagers), waking up early does not have to be the only way to enjoy the sunlight and keep active. There are so many different ways you can enjoy the outdoors while at work, at night, and on the weekends. Bring your workout shoes and a change of clothes to work! This allows you to go for a nice walk or run on your lunch break. If you can’t find the time to get out while at work, and an indoor gym is not for you, set up lights in your back yard and gather the family for an activity you can all benefit from. Even a simple game of tag will get your family moving around and bonding over a healthy activity. Remember, the weekend is your time to shine, in the sun that is. Pack up a nice picnic, bring a Frisbee, soccer ball, or whichever activity that suits your family best, and get outside and play!

Get Your Vitamin D

After daylight savings time ends, it can be difficult to get your normal daily Vitamin D intake from the sun like we usually do in the summer. This shortage of Vitamin D in your body can bring on the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). There are simple and effective ways you can prevent the onset of SAD, which can be a real drain on your creativity and feelings of wellbeing. First, get as much natural sunlight as you can. As stated before, take a walk on your lunch break, or move your desk to a window and open up the blinds. You’ll feel the warmth of the sun and get natural Vitamin D that your body craves. Next, add some essential foods to your diet: lean proteins, foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, colorful berries, dairy products, bananas, limit your sugar intake, and increase your intake of folic acid. By simply eating the right foods and getting the right amount of sun, you can prevent the onset of SAD and stay motivated to stick to your routine all season long!
