Cool Weather Gardening
Thursday, December 08 2016

With the fall season nearly behind us, it’s time to start planning your cool weather gardens. There are many different plants and vegetables that thrive in cold weather and bring beauty to your yard at the same time. Knowing which plants flourish in the ground and which ones in pots/containers can be one of the trickiest parts in starting your garden. Check out these tips to get the most out of your winter foliage!

It’s All About the Selection

Choosing the right flowers and vegetables makes a huge difference in how your garden will thrive. Certain vegetation becomes very susceptible to frost and root rot which make them bad candidates for cool weather gardening. Allium vegetables (onions, garlic and shallots) and Cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale and brussel sprouts) not only love cool and wet weather, but they are great winter veggies to add to stews and soups.

To add some color to your garden, select snapdragons, pansies, violas, calendulas, and bachelor buttons. These flowers will add the right touch of purples, yellows, and pinks and will be overflowing from your garden bed in no time! If you’re feeling adventurous, you can add pansies and violas into a salad for a beautiful and exciting treat. Red cabbage is beautiful, colorful and delicious. By selecting the right greenery to sow in your garden; you will see it effortlessly flourish in no time.

To Pot or not to Pot?

Knowing where to plant is as important as knowing what to plant. Although certain plants prefer wet-weathered climates, it’s key to know which ones require proper drainage and which can tolerate freezing. Cruciferous vegetables like to be planted in containers or raised garden beds. Providing them with plenty of water will allow them to freeze solid for a few days, if the weather gets cold enough, and bounce back when they thaw. After Cruciferous veggies freeze, they taste even sweeter!

Allium vegetables prefer to be planted straight in the ground. This type of vegetable does not grow up and out of the soil like most; rather, they grow down into the soil. By sowing your Alliums directly into the ground, this allows for them to reach their full potential of growth; meaning bigger and tastier garlic, onions, and shallots for your wintertime recipes.

Let your cool weathered garden fill your backyard with a seamless transition from outdoors to indoors with beautiful Bi-Fold Patio Doors, Multi-Slide Patio Doors or Lift and Slide Patio Doors. Finding the right patio door to for your home is easy with help and great products from AG Millworks Simply use the Match Me With A Dealer button to help get your project off to the right start!

We've set our clocks back an hour and the sun is rising and setting earlier. With this little change it becomes harder and harder to stay motivated to keep our daily routine. We wake up, go to work, and by the time we get home, the sun has set and your body is ready for bed. We come up with so many excuses to not keep up with our everyday exercises, chores, and family activities. By setting a few guidelines, planning family outings and eating right, your post-daylight savings time blues will quickly disappear.

Stick to Your Agenda

As the days grow shorter our daily routine seems to fall by the wayside. This may be due to reduced hours of sunlight which can cause a lack of motivation--or just plain laziness. The best way to keep the whole family focused is to write out a schedule and live by it, literally! By setting a daily regimen for the whole family, you’ll notice how efficiently things get done around the house. Get a large weekly calendar and place it somewhere where the family can see it every day. Map out tasks for each individual, list what time the task needs to be done, and set a reward for that task. By visualizing your agenda and setting up incentives, you’ll be surprised how quickly household tasks are accomplished.

Get Out and Play

Even though there are only about 10 hours of light each day, we need to make an effort to get out and stay active. Most of us are not early risers (especially teenagers), waking up early does not have to be the only way to enjoy the sunlight and keep active. There are so many different ways you can enjoy the outdoors while at work, at night, and on the weekends. Bring your workout shoes and a change of clothes to work! This allows you to go for a nice walk or run on your lunch break. If you can’t find the time to get out while at work, and an indoor gym is not for you, set up lights in your back yard and gather the family for an activity you can all benefit from. Even a simple game of tag will get your family moving around and bonding over a healthy activity. Remember, the weekend is your time to shine, in the sun that is. Pack up a nice picnic, bring a Frisbee, soccer ball, or whichever activity that suits your family best, and get outside and play!

Get Your Vitamin D

After daylight savings time ends, it can be difficult to get your normal daily Vitamin D intake from the sun like we usually do in the summer. This shortage of Vitamin D in your body can bring on the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). There are simple and effective ways you can prevent the onset of SAD, which can be a real drain on your creativity and feelings of wellbeing. First, get as much natural sunlight as you can. As stated before, take a walk on your lunch break, or move your desk to a window and open up the blinds. You’ll feel the warmth of the sun and get natural Vitamin D that your body craves. Next, add some essential foods to your diet: lean proteins, foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, colorful berries, dairy products, bananas, limit your sugar intake, and increase your intake of folic acid. By simply eating the right foods and getting the right amount of sun, you can prevent the onset of SAD and stay motivated to stick to your routine all season long!

Increase natural light in your home by adding a beautiful Bi-Fold, Lift and Slide, or Multi-Slide Patio Door to your home. AG Millworks can help you create healthy indoor-outdoor living areas. Contact the professionals at AG Millworks to learn more OR by simply clicking the button below!

Stunning Autumn Outdoor Decorations For All To Enjoy!

Add the Perfect Touch of Fall to Your Entryway with These Great Decorating Ideas

So, you have finally taken down your Halloween decorations and the house is looking a bit dull. Now let’s all be honest, it’s a bit too early to start decorating for Hanukkah or Christmas, but you still want to stay in the holiday mood. We have the perfect solution to keep that feel-good holiday spirit flowing throughout your home. By adding a touch of fall to your front porch, you and your guests will continue to feel the holiday love.

Re-Use your Halloween Pumpkins

If you read our previous blogs about “no carve pumpkins,” you may still have perfectly good pumpkins you can use to update your seasonal outdoor decorations. By repurposing your pumpkins with fall themed colors, you can turn your spooky decorations into elegant outdoor pieces for all to enjoy. Head to your local arts and crafts store and pick up a can or two of gold metallic spray paint. Adding a sparkly coat of paint to your pumpkins brings a quick and chic holiday feel to your home. If you want to keep it simple, use ivory paint instead of metallic. This will give you a neutral, yet stylish, addition without overpowering other decorations.

DIY Wreath for the Front Door

Get creative. With the holiday season upon us, many guests will be knocking on your door. First, take a few minutes to wipe down the surfaces of your door and any glass in the entry with a clean soft cloth so your door gleams. Add a touch of fall to your entry door by creating a beautiful wreath that guests will think you spent a fortune on.  Pick up a pre-made grapevine wreath in a unique shape or size. Next, add some texture and color to your rustic wreath by securing three or four flowers to the vines with crafting wire—think red, yellow, orange, and white to project that colorful autumn ambience. Hang your wreath directly on a hook, or use a length of ribbon or burlap and let it hang. This project will take only ten or fifteen minutes and your entry door will be holiday ready!

Greet Your Guests with a Sign

Another way to make your home feel inviting for the holidays is to add a little welcome note to your front porch. Head over to your local second hand store and pick up an old frame or serving platter that has a rustic feel to it. Paint the front of your serving platter or the glass of the frame with chalkboard paint and write a personalized holiday-themed welcome message. With this simple addition to the front porch, your guests will feel the holiday vibe before you even answer the doorbell!

Cozy Up On Your Patio In Style!
Thursday, November 03 2016

With the fall season well under way, we have experienced a shift from summer heat to cool autumn breezes.  Stop hiding inside with the heat blasting; it’s time to step outside and embrace the chilly weather.  Impromptu outdoor gatherings will be easy if you just take the time to set up a stylish cozy patio that you can effortlessly enjoy all season long.

Textiles, Textiles, Textiles

Embracing a beautiful fall sunset is a must! The challenge is being able to withstand the cool twilight breezes that come with the pink and orange skies. Prepare your family for a sunset session by having outdoor pillows, blankets, and, of course, a rug to insulate your patio space. By purchasing outdoor items specifically made for harsher weather, you can feel at ease leaving them outside. If you opt for a stylish sheep skin throw, keep it within arm’s reach inside a storage chest on the patio along with your pillows to protect it from water and debris.

Seating Arrangements

Being comfortable is key. Prepare your patio with seating around your outdoor fireplace or fire pit for the whole family to enjoy. Outdoor furniture is great because it can withstand various weather conditions, but it is not always the most comfortable. If you’re looking for something stylish to nuzzle in, opt for a floor pillow or pouf. These fun and decorative seating alternatives are great for both kids and adults. Not only will you be extremely comfortable, but you can reorganize your seating arrangments with ease.

It’s In the Color

You can create a warm and cozy fall patio through the colors you choose to decorate your with. By choosing neutral colors for your textiles and adding darkly stained wooden furniture to your outdoor decor, you can create a sense of warmth that will draw you and your family outside to enjoy your welcoming patio space.

When preparing for the cold weather, remember that you can effortlessly enjoy the season on your patio in style. Ensure that your patio is ready for year-round use by choosing beautiful Bi-Fold Patio Doors, Lift and Slides, Multi-Slide Patio Door Systems, Entry Doors, and Windows. Learn How to Keep Your Kids Healthy this Halloween!
Thursday, October 27 2016

Halloween health tips for your kids!

Establishing healthy habits at a young age is important. The habits you help your kid develop now, will last for years to come! However, with Halloween right around the corner, it’s important to be wary of Halloween candy. While candy is a tasty treat, it’s full of sugar and fat that can negatively impact your child’s health. Make this Halloween your healthiest yet, and learn how to keep your kid’s candy habits in place with these tips!

Think Small.

Portion size is everything when it comes to developing health habits. Remember that your kids are small and that their portion sizes should reflect their tiny stomachs. Allow your kids to eat their Halloween candy in small doses, but keep in mind that a single serving should be no more than 100 calories. That way your kids can enjoy a treat without going overboard!

The Importance of Moderation.

It’s okay to let your kids enjoy their childhood and have a little candy! Trick-or-treating is a rite of passage when it comes to growing up. However, that doesn’t mean that they should eat all their candy in one sitting. The key to a healthy relationship with sweets is to enjoy them in moderation. Use Halloween as the perfect opportunity to teach your little ones about eating treats of any sort in moderation.

Swap Candy for Toys.

In addition to establishing healthy habits, set a good example. Rather than handing out handfuls of candy this year, help make the neighborhood a bit healthier this Halloween! Switch out unhealthy Halloween candy with Halloween toys. For example, stock up on plenty of spooky temporary tattoos, stickers, and plastic jewelry to hand out instead.

Be Creative.

If you’re throwing a Halloween soiree, replace the numerous bowls of candy with homemade healthy treats for all! You can make simple ghost-like treats with bananas and chocolate chips, or scary goblin mouths with apples, peanut butter, and almond slices. By creating healthy options for kids, and adults, you won’t have to monitor their sugar intake as much. You’ll have more time to enjoy your company rather than pestering your kids.

Creative No-Carve Pumpkin Decorating Ideas for All
Tuesday, October 25 2016

Think outside of the box with these new ways to decorate pumpkins!

Gone are the days of pumpkin carving. Rather than carving a pumpkin this year, opt for a safer and more creative option! Turn your pumpkin carving into a family fun arts and crafts evening. Not only is this a fun and alternative way to transform your pumpkins, it extends the life span for them as well. From painted pumpkins to chalk pumpkins, check out these ways that you can add a new spin to your Halloween family traditions.

Painted Pumpkins.

Ditch the carving knife for a paintbrush! Rather than using sharp tools that are dangerous for your kids, let your kids participate in all the Halloween fun with a pumpkin and non-toxic paint. Set some newspapers down, to catch the mess, and let your kids go to town decorating their pumpkins. Use paint, markers, glitter, rhinestones, stickers, and any other art supplies that you can find and let your kids’ imaginations run wild.

Mummy Pumpkins.

Pay homage to classic Hollywood monsters this Halloween and make pumpkin mummies. This simple, yet appealing craft is easy to make and is sure to impress all your trick-or-treaters. Start by getting plenty of cheesecloth and glow in the dark paint. Coat the cheesecloth, wrap your pumpkin up in the cloth, and add a pair of googly eyes!

Chalkboard Pumpkins.

Let your kids decorate their pumpkins over and over again. Turn your pumpkins into chalkboards. All you need is a little chalkboard paint! With so many different colored chalks and chalkboard paints out there, the sky is the limit for your kid’s creativity. Paint the pumpkins, let them dry, and then let your kids draw to their hearts content…over and over again!

When it comes time to display your new and improved Halloween pumpkins, find the perfect place for them out on your patio. Ensure that your patio is ready for year-round use by choosing beautiful Bi-Fold Patio DoorsLift and Slides, Multi-Slide Patio Door SystemsEntry Doors, and Windows. AG Millworks can help you create the perfect indoor-outdoor living areas. Contact the professionals at AG Millworks to learn more by simply clicking the Request a Quote button to get started!

Here are some tips in creating a more secluded environment.

Your home should be your quiet oasis away from all the stresses of your day. It’s where you go for a little peace and quiet, and plenty of privacy! However, sometimes your backyard doesn’t give you the privacy that you need. Check out these helpful tips to make your backyard the stress-free escape zone.

Green Coverings.

Plants are a great way to naturally add more privacy to your yard while maintaining the beautiful aesthetics of your yard. Strategically plant trees, or other tall foliage, in areas where you need a little more privacy from your neighbors. Try planting a row of lemon trees along your property line to block out any unwanted attention.

Pergolas and Paneling.

A pergola is a great way to help give your backyard more of a secluded feel. It’s a beautiful addition to your landscaping, plus, it helps to add more shade to your backyard. By adding wood paneling, it helps create a breathable screen in between you and your neighbor’s yard. You can create an easy and affordable wooden screen by stacking old pallets and adding a little paint/stain to the wood; voila, you have privacy!

Block Out Noise.

There are multiple components to privacy, including audible privacy. Install a water feature so that you can lessen the noise of your neighbors. Try adding a fountain, for example. Additionally, the soothing water sounds will help to muffle noise from your backyard, increasing your privacy.

When it comes to keeping your backyard private, ensure that you have all the right tools. Ensure that you home stays well protected with the right doors. Create a Spooky Patio this Halloween
Friday, October 07 2016

Here are some Halloween décor ideas!

Whether you’re throwing a party or just want to get into the Halloween spirit, your holiday décor can make a huge impact. Creating the perfect spooky atmosphere for your guests can help set the tone for all! Check out these Halloween decorating ideas to help you get your home ready for the holiday.

Plenty of Pumpkins.

They’re festive, durable, weather-proof, and they can double as decoration all season long! When it comes to decorating your patio, ensure that you have plenty of pumpkins. With so many shapes, sizes, and colors, they’re the perfect addition to your Halloween house décor. Stack them near a bushel of hay for cute fall aesthetics, or carve them to make a bold statement on All Hallows Eve. No matter how you use them, they’re sure to be a success!

Spooky Lighting.

Don’t underestimate the power of lighting! Lighting can make all the difference when it comes to setting the mood. Create a frightening mood by placing flickering LED candles in paper bags with stenciled spooky faces cut out; place them along your pathway to help guide your guests to your ghostly house. You can also pair dim lighting with orange and purple string lights and add a fog machine to give your Halloween party an eerie mood.

Ghostly Garden.

Add a few terrifying accessories to your garden! Set up a haunted graveyard with plenty of tombstones and maybe even a few zombie elements. By using old cardboard boxes, you can cut out and create your own personalized tombstones; this can be a fun Friday night craft for the whole family! Remember, there is no need to get fancy, decorate with what you have. For example, try throwing a scary mask on a lawn gnome or over a porch light. When it comes time to entertain on Halloween, your garden will be ready to spook all!

Learn How to Style Your Entryway to Make a Lasting Impression
Thursday, August 25 2016

Redesign your entryway to make a bold statement and impress your guests.Your entryway is the window to the rest of your home. It’s where first impressions are made, and it sets the tone for the entire design of your home! Give your home’s entrance the attention it deserves when it comes to your home décor! Here are a few tips to help you create that “wow” factor in your entryway.

Add a Little Color.

Don’t underestimate the power of color! It can make a huge impact when it comes to designing your home, especially in your entryway. Even a little pop of color can help to make a lasting impression. Go big and paint the walls red, or make a subtler statement and choose the perfect accent pieces. Warmer colors like red and orange create a welcoming feel, while blue and green make your space feel more relaxed and tranquil.

Use Texture to Your Advantage.

Jazz up your entryway by adding drywall texture, artwork, picture frames, or even decorative mirrors to bring the walls to life. Mirrors are especially unique because they enhance the lighting of a space, and make the area seem larger.

Lighting is Everything.

A dark entry way is uninviting, and can even make your entrance look smaller. By installing a few extra windows or choosing a door that lets in plenty of light, your home’s entrance can welcome guests with a warm, and inviting tone.  The more natural light, the bigger and brighter your entry way will appear! For more lighting, even after dark, add a beautiful chandelier, a simple pendant lamp, or, for tighter spaces, recessed lighting. The brighter the better when it comes to making an impression.

Brighten up your entryway with the right entry doors to enhance your home’s aesthetics. AG Millworks can help you create the perfect indoor-outdoor living areas. Contact the professionals at AG Millworks to learn more by simply clicking the Request a Quote button to get started!

Learn How to Pick the Perfect Patio Door with These Tips
Thursday, August 18 2016

Selecting the Perfect Patio Door

The options are infinite when it comes to choosing your next patio door. From French doors to sliding doors and pocketing sliders to big, beautiful Bi-Folds you can choose the door that best fits your needs. However, with so many options it can be hard to narrow your choices. The decision ultimately comes down to your needs and your design preferences. Keep these tips in mind when shopping for doors.

Manage Space Constraints.

Consider what space you have to work with when thinking about installing new patio doors. While you may love the idea of doors that swing out (French doors and Bi-Fold doors), if they open out to a tight space such as a second floor balcony, you may want to choose a sliding door option to maximize the limited space.

Pick the Right Material.

When deciding on the right door, think carefully about what type of material suits your conditions. Wood doors are beautiful, but they require rigorous maintenance, especially in harsh weather conditions. Patio doors with low-maintenance aluminum cladding on the exterior and your choice of beautiful wood on the interior (where weather won’t affect the wood) are a great alternative.  And of course, along with your needs you must consider your budget.

Consider Design.

When looking for the right patio door, remember to consider the architectural design of your home. Choose a door that complements your home’s aesthetics. For example, a pair of all wood French doors with multiple panes of glass would be charming, and a great architectural fit for a California Craftsman home. But those same doors would look completely out of place on a Mid-Century Modern home.

When it comes to designing your patio, complete the look with the right patio doors. With an extensive selection of Bi-Fold Patio Doors, Lift and Slide, Multi-Slide Patio Door System, Entry Doors, and Windows AG Millworks can help you create the perfect indoor-outdoor living areas. Learn how to throw an outdoor movie night in your own backyard!

Summer is a time where memories are made with friends and family. Full of fun, games, and time spent outdoors, summer is the perfect time to host an outdoor movie night. Make the most out of the remaining days of summer (and beautiful weather), by learning how to throw your very own patio movie night!

Step 1: Pick the Perfect Screen.

Enjoy your favorite flick up on the big screen! It’s no secret that you’ll need a place to screen your movies, however, you have a few options. Whether you choose to go a simple route and screen the film on a blank wall, rent a screen from a local vendor, or test out your DIY skills by building your own screen, choose the option that best fits your needs. That way, you have the perfect atmosphere for you guests to sit back, relax, and enjoy the film!

Step 2: Create Ample Seating.

Transform your patio into a cozy, relaxed space with plenty of seating. Get creative and work with your patio space to find the best seating arrangement for your outdoor movie screening. Mix it up and rearrange your patio furniture so that all of your guests have a view of the screen. For extra seating, don’t be afraid to use the floor! Set up a sea of blankets complete with colorful cushions and bean bags to give your movie night a bit of bohemian style.

Step 3: Bring the Concession Stand to Your Backyard.

What’s a movie night without a few snacks? Dazzle your guests with a concession table full of treats fit for a Hollywood premier! Update movie theater staples with more gourmet versions. Offer a selection of flavored popcorn like white cheddar jalapeño or sea salt caramel, and set up your very own candy station where your guests can make their own goodie bag. It’s a delicious twist on a movie theater classic.

Create your dream living space with the right patio doors. Get more out of the second half of the summer with these backyard barbecue hacks.

Can you believe the summer is halfway done? Don’t miss your chance to make the most out of the remaining sunny weeks! Use these hacks to throw your best backyard barbecue yet.

Know your solo cups.

Part of the beauty of backyard barbecues is that you can use disposable plastic ware (goodbye, dishes!). But did you know that the lines on a Solo cup mean something? The line closest to the bottom measures out 1 ounce, the amount of alcohol added to cocktails. The next line marks the 5-ounce mark, or the measure for a glass of wine. The third line from the bottom hits 12 ounces, or the usual pour for a beer.

Protect your guests.

Set out a pretty pail stocked with sunscreen and bug spray so your guests can easily get what they need to fend off pests and harmful rays.

Or, if you’re looking for a more ambience-creating bug defense, create citronella candle jars. Simply float rosemary, lemon, and a floating candle in a mason jar filled with citronella oil!

Create menu art.

Get a big piece of plywood and sand off the edges to avoid splinters. Then paint it with a couple of coats of chalkboard paint. Grab your kids and your chalk and create a beautiful menu so your guests can know what’s for dinner and enjoy your creative flair.

Looking to make more of your outdoor space this summer? We have Bi-Fold Patio DoorsLift and Slide, Multi Slide Patio Door System, Entry Doors, and Windows that can help you create indoor-outdoor living areas. If you’re looking to make the most of your outdoor space this summer, consider these four landscape improvement tips.

Can you believe we’re already a month into the summer? Now that the holiday weekend is behind us, things should settle down, and you can settle into your summer groove. Do you have space to enjoy it? Improve your landscaping with these four ideas so you can make the most of the season from the comfort of your home!

Light it up. Why should you only be able to enjoy your yard during daylight hours? It’s easier than ever to create a great ambience outdoors because you can buy inexpensive, solar-powered lights that stake into the ground. You’ll never have to worry about hooking them up to electricity or replacing the batteries again!

Make it tasty. Why not get more use out of your garden? Instead of planting things that will only look nice, plant something you can use in the kitchen. Basil and rosemary are easy to grow and an excellent addition to virtually any dish!

Add some color. Spice up your landscaping by planting colorful blooms here and there. Pops of color will add some visual interest to your yard in the same way that exciting throw pillow added some zest to your living room.

Go native. The California drought makes native plants a better idea than ever. Plus, the Golden State has some impressive options from which to choose! By opting for native plants, you’ll be able to grow beautiful plant life without using copious amounts of water.

As you transform your outdoor areas, let the professionals help you enjoy indoor-outdoor living. Through our Bi-Fold Patio Doors, Lift and Slides, Multi-Slide Patio Door System, Entry Doors, and Windows we can make it easier to have the beauty of your landscaping seamlessly transition to the beauty of your home’s interior. Rushing to get ready for your 4th of July party? Here are some quick and easy home decoration ideas.

If the holiday weekend snuck up on you the way it did us, you might be feeling a little rushed to pull everything together for your Independence  Day festivities. Decorating your home for your party doesn’t have to be a headache, though. Here are some impressive-looking 4th of July décor ideas that will only take you minutes to pull together!

Star-Spangled Wreath

Set the stage from the moment people show up at your door with a wow-worthy wreath. Buy toothpick flags (you can get a 500-pack on Amazon for $12!) and a Styrofoam wreath. Stick the toothpicks into the wreath until you’ve covered it entirely. String it up for an instant patriotic touch!

Country Cushions

Create no-sew covers for your outdoor chair cushions in minutes! You’ll just need two bandanas of the same color, four rubber bands, and some thin ribbon for each cushion. Lay one bandana on a flat surface, center the cushion on it, and top with the other bandana. Secure each corner with a rubber band and cover the band with your thin ribbon. Voilà!

Patriotic Lanterns

If you’ve got a large tree in your backyard, consider adding a patriotic pop with these incredibly easy DIY lanterns! Buy a handful of white paper lanterns and some wide red, white, and blue ribbon. Using double-stick tape or glue dots, wrap the ribbon around the lantern. You can add a single stripe in the middle, or multiple stripes if you’re feeling particularly festive. Hang them up and enjoy!

Want to impress your guests the next time they attend one of your holiday parties? We can customize Bi-Fold Patio Doors, Lift and Slide Patio Doors, a Multi-Slide Patio Door System, Entry Doors, and Windows to perfectly suit your unique home. Summer is officially here! Do these things to get your home ready for the new season.

Today marks the first official day of the warmest – and arguably most fun – season of the year. Now that summer is at our door, it’s time to welcome it in! These to-dos will help you prep your home for a great season ahead.

Plant some flowers. Bring color and beauty to your yard by planting fresh blooms in your yard. Add a couple of planters by the front door to up your curb appeal, and touch up the flowerbeds in your backyard. Lay fresh mulch, too.

Clean the gutters. This isn’t the most rewarding task, but it needs to be done before summer showers come!

Wash your patio furniture. After months of disuse, your patio furniture is probably looking a little tired. Hose it all off, and wash your outdoor fabrics according to the manufacturer’s instructions (most can be washed in your machine on warm).

Prep your grill. Get ready for the coming summer barbecues by scrubbing down your grill. Heat it up for 10 minutes before you start tackling the built-up gunk and it will come off more easily. Just make sure you disconnect it from the gas and let it cool before you get to it!

Clean your windows. Let the beautiful summer sun stream in through streak-free glass by wiping down your windows.

Hose off your deck/patio. Summer means no shoes! You can stroll around your yard without tracking a bunch of dirt inside by hosing off your patio, deck, and/or walkways.

Want to get more of the beautiful weather outside into your home? You can! Our Bi-Fold Patio Doors, Lift and Slide Patio Doors, Multi-Slide Patio Doors, Entry Doors, and beautiful Windows can help you enjoy indoor-outdoor living this summer. Ready to freshen up your traditional home? These tips will help you update without losing your home’s charm.

There’s a lot to love about a traditional home. With the history behind it and evident magnetism, an older home offers a lot. If you’ve fallen for a traditional home but want to make sure it looks charming, not dated, consider these tips to update it.

Let in light.

One of the biggest issues with older homes is the smaller windows and darker colors we find in so many of them. Installing windows to let in more natural light will make your space feel bigger, cleaner, and more modern. Just imagine how amazing your front room will feel with the sunlight streaming in! As a bonus, more windows mean you’ll use less electricity, cutting energy use and utility bills.

Create contrast.

Don’t be afraid to pair contemporary elements with your home’s traditional features. Sleek metallic pulls on the cabinets in your kitchen can add a touch of “wow,” and a modern rug laid over the original flooring will help you home look traditional, not old. Play with your decor to find the right blend of elements for your particular home.

Keep it clean.

Make sure your home doesn’t feel old or dark by opting for light, neutral colors. While you might love the idea of an oxblood study, dark paint colors are going to make rooms feel smaller and more dated. Keep things light and airy to modernize your home’s look.

Are you ready to update your traditional home? We can customize Bi-Fold Patio Doors, Lift and Slide Patio Doors, Multi-Slide Patio Doors, Entry Doors, and beautiful Windows with decorative panels or cottage grids to help you blend your home’s existing charm with modern elements. Homes are going green, and these trends are shaping eco-friendly home builds.

When building a new home in 2016, there’s a lot to consider that wasn’t a factor just a few decades ago. Specifically, faced with environmental issues across the planet, more and more home builders are working to create spaces that co-exist with – rather than negatively impact – the environment. These green trends are shaping home building.

Cut chemicals.

Homeowners want their homes to be healthy for the earth and for their own bodies. High-quality paints with zero (or close to zero) volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can help do exactly that. Not only do they not release harmful, smog-creating chemicals as they dry, they also don’t leach carbon-based, health-hazardous substances into the air families breathe.

Cut shipping.

Food isn’t the only thing people are buying locally. When builders choose locally sourced materials, they prevent the need to ship heavy loads, eliminating the pollution that transportation would otherwise create.

Cut waste.

An airtight home stays warmer or cooler, depending on what you need. This cuts energy waste (and your utility bills), so it’s a huge component of building green. On top of insulating walls, it’s also important to choose doors and windows that keep your home comfortable. Technology is also helping reduce energy waste, as programmable thermostats can ensure you’re not heating or cooling your home while you’re away.

Are you working to make your home as eco-friendly as possible? We can help! With our Bi-Fold Patio Doors, Lift And Slide Patio Doors, and Multi-Slide Patio Doors we can help you blend your home with its surrounding environment and minimize energy loss. Contact the professionals at AG Millworks by simply clicking the Request A Quote button, so we can help you create the most beautiful, green home possible!

If in the smallest of homes, you can still be the ultimate party host with these tips and tricks for when you throw your next get-together.

There’s a misconception out there: if you have a small place, it can be difficult to host parties (dinner or otherwise) because there just doesn’t seem like there will be enough room for everyone. If you organize your home in the right way and become efficient by using every inch that’s available, you’ll find that you can host an incredible bash in your humble abode!

Tips and Tricks to Entertain in a Small Home

Clean it up!

Get rid of the clutter and put non-essentials out of sight – stash it in closets, under your bed, or even at a neighbor’s (if they

don’t mind). Clean up the rest – your bathroom should be spotless, your furniture dust-free, and your floors vacuumed or

swept and mopped. A clean and un-cluttered space always looks and feels bigger and is more welcoming to your guests.

Create traffic flow and places to gather

Move furniture so there are clear walkways to avoid traffic congestion.  Organize “stations” for drinks, the main meal and

desserts and make sure these are centralized in different areas to give people places to congregate and connect. Make it

easy for guests to get what they need – keep cocktail essentials stocked at the bar, plates and flatware at the buffet, and

desserts at a separate table.

Make the Most of Every Available Inch of Space

In every small home, efficient use of space matters. In the kitchen, you will need to utilize all the counter space – clear counter

tops by putting small appliances and other items away in the cupboards. In the living room, clear the coffee table and place

side tables around the room for extra surface areas. Set out a few folding chairs or floor cushions to make sure everyone has a

comfortable place to sit.

Add Welcoming Ambiance

Put up decorative strands of twinkling lights to create a festive mood. Use your best tableware and linens and add small flower

arrangements throughout the rooms. Place chilled beverages in a large tub full of ice, have fun tunes playing in the

background, but most of all relax and enjoy time with your guests!

Create even more space for entertaining by open up your home with Bi-Fold patio doors, Lift and Slide Patio Doors, or Multi-Slide Patio Doors. AG Millworks can help transform any room of your home to allow you to fully enjoy luxurious indoor-outdoor living. Whether you’re looking for your ideal entry doors, Bi-Fold patio doors, lift and slide patio doors, or multi-slide patio doors for your home, we can meet your needs and your wants. Follow these simple steps to choose the builder that’s right for you.

Can we build it? Yes, we can – assuming you have the contractor that’s right for you and your project! We’ve all heard about remodeling problems: spiraling budgets, half-finished projects and construction taking way longer than planned. These stories may seem like nightmares, but in reality you are likely hearing the worst of the worst. The vast majority of builders are competent, professional, and more than capable of amazing results and with a bit of due-diligence, you can find a contractor that will work well with you and your project.

Get Recommendations

Love the kitchen and patio addition your neighbors just had done? Find out who they worked with and see if they are suitable for your

project. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce or look online for services in your area on Houzz or Angie’s list where you can read

reviews and see the type of work the professionals specialize in.

Do You Need a Specialist or a General Contractor?

A general contractor is suitable for most jobs unless your project requires something special. Some custom projects such as installing large

patio doors or creating beautiful tile design require someone who specializes in these areas for optimum results.

Know what you want AND be open to suggestions…

You have a vision and your contractor can help bring it to fruition and he may have a more efficient way to get there.  Building and

construction are his specialty! He may be able to facilitate getting the blueprint plans drawn-up and assist in wading through the local

building code requirements and permit process. Use your builder’s knowledge, experience and expertise to your advantage.

One of the most important parts of taking on a remodeling project is choosing a quality craftsman that will match your vision and last for years to come. Ideas to enjoy entertaining evenings on the patio.

Hanging out on the patio can be great fun, especially when the seasons begin to change. Gather friends and family and head outside with these great ideas to enjoy a spring evening on the patio.

Dine Alfresco

Add some spice by changing up the menu and prepare something out of the ordinary. Look for recipes online or from one of your favorite

cooking shows. Maybe try focaccia Reubens, steamed wild striped bass with ginger and scallions or grilled artichokes with green olive dip.

Delish! Create ambiance by stringing lights or adding candles.

Trivia Night

Trivia can be loads of fun, especially if you bring the game outdoors. There are many trivia games available on almost any topic: Star Wars,

Lord of the Rings, football, science, or just general trivia. Be sure to remember that it’s just a game and keep the competition friendly!

Craft Beer Tasting

Gather some like-minded friends and purchase a few craft beer varieties you’ve never tried before. Rate and compare these micro-brews

for appearance, smell, taste, and mouth-feel.  You may not be beer connoisseurs, but will enjoy the comradery of getting together and trying

something new.

Stargazing

Enjoy a relaxing (and even romantic) evening stargazing. If you live away from city lights you should be able to pick out constellations and

other celestial bodies on a clear night. Download a stargazing app to locate and learn more about the constellations.

Alternative energy sources may be the wave of the future, but is it right for you at this moment?

Whether we want to admit it or not, the planet is changing: 2014 had been the warmest year on record, until 2015 rolled through it and usurped it; 2016 is already underway to be even warmer.

Cleaner, alternative forms of energy may just be the answer and have been steadily growing in availability as the need for change has risen. Many residential houses have implemented solar or wind energy systems that decrease carbon emissions and resource usage, and, as a bonus, can reduce your monthly electric bill.

The federal government is onboard to help defer the cost by implementing a 30 percent federal energy tax credit that is available until December 31, 2019. In theory, by installing solar panels or a wind turbine system, you may eventually save money on the cost of your energy usage. These technologies are becoming increasingly more economical to set-up, but the cost of the installing a system can still be pricey and payback timelines may be long range.

If alternative energy is something you are considering, here are some questions you may want ask yourself:

– Do you want a system that will provide all your power needs? Or do you want supplemental energy generation to reduce the amount of power you buy from the electric company?

– How long do you plan to live in this house? To effectively recoup the cost of installation, planning to stay in your home for a number of years may be best.

– Is a wind turbine or solar panel system best suited for your area’s weather conditions?

– What is your budget?

Updating your home’s doors and windows may be another great way to lower your carbon footprint. Innovative design is the cornerstone of AG Millwork’s products. Whether you’re looking for Bi-Fold Patio Doors, Multi-Slide Patio Doors or Lift and Slide Patio Doors for your home, look no further. Simply click the Match Me With A Dealer button to get started!

Bring back these 90’s decor trends for a surprisingly fresh way to beautify your home.

Whether you’re an avid #tbt hashtagger or just like to look at old photos, you know there’s some fun in revisiting old trends. In honor of Throwback Thursday (#tbt), we thought it would be fun to highlight some décor trends from the 90’s that are making a major comeback today!

Wallpaper

Perhaps thanks to the time we all spent ripping out the gaudy wallpaper of the later 1900s, the early 2000’s were a wallpaper-free zone. Today, though, wallpaper is making a grand return. Instead of papering your whole room, pick a fun print and use it to create an accent wall. Instant wow!

Throwback Colors

It’s time to revisit those colors that were everywhere in the 90s. Mauve and hunter green were loved for a reason. Just don’t be too heavy-handed. Use these hues for accent colors and you’ll be able to bring back these tones of the past in a modern way.

Brass

Brass was a definite favorite a couple decades ago – and it’s poised to be again soon. If you’re sick of gold and copper, try accenting your space with brass. Although you’ll be calling on décor favorite from the 1990’s, it will feel surprisingly fresh since brass hasn’t made a full return… yet!

While it’s fun to revisit these trends in home décor, there are some aspects of your home that you want to make sure are timeless. AG Millworks can find you the perfect Custom Patio Doors, Entry Doors, and Windows to give you luxurious indoor-outdoor living that looks great no matter what’s trending. Whether you’re looking for your ideal entry doors, Bi-Fold patio doors, lift and slide patio doors, or multi-slide patio doors for your home, you simply need to click the Match Me With A Dealer button to get started!

Spring fashion (for your home, that is) is here! Bring it home with you by using these décor trends.

Spring is one of the best times of the year in the fashion world. The new start to the seasons inspires freshness on and off the runway, and our current season yields some of the best pieces – and a lot of the year’s trends. Even if you’re not redoing your wardrobe, you can still take advantage of spring fashion trends by jumping on these home décor ideas.

Metallic Accents

Metallic isn’t going anywhere – in fashion or in home décor. A cluster of small metallic vases will be eye-catching, and a large gold, silver, or (our pick for this year) copper wall decal will give you serious wow-factor. Plus, metallic accents will work with whatever color palette you already have in your home.

Color Blocked Walls & Fabrics

Color blocking is all the rage, and it works brilliantly at home. When choosing wall colors put the lighter one on the top portion of the wall and your room will feel larger. If you’re not quite ready to repaint, color blocked throws, rugs, and pillows are a great way to incorporate this trend.

Bohemian Feel

Notice a hippy vibe in fashion? Bring it home for a more comfortable, relaxed feel! Fringe, soft textures, subtle tie-dying, and warm hues will all help your home stay on trend while feeling inviting. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, either!

If you want to further update your home, AG Millworks can help transform any room of your home with custom patio doors, entry doors, and windows that allow you to fully enjoy luxurious indoor-outdoor living. Whether you’re looking for your ideal Entry Door, Bi-Fold Patio Doors, Lift and Slide Patio Doors, or Multi-Slide Patio Doors for your home, we can meet your needs and your wants. How to: Update Your Kitchen Without a Remodel
Thursday, March 31 2016

These easy updates can transform your kitchen without the bother of a remodel.

The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in every home. It’s also one of the most expensive to remodel. If your kitchen could use a pick-me-up but you won’t want to undertake a major renovation, you have options. Here are three easy changes you can make to dramatically improve the look, feel, and use of your kitchen without a remodel!

Bi-Fold Doors: Get more out of your kitchen by extending it to your outdoor areas with a simple swap. Changing your existing kitchen window for a Bi-Fold window makes it possible to serve to your patio straight from the kitchen. Set up a spread or build a bar on your kitchen counter and, with these windows, you can access it from your patio or any outdoor area!

Hardware: You might think changing out cabinet and drawer pulls is minor – but count how many you have in your kitchen. That’s a lot of hardware, and swapping it out can make a major impact. Plus, buying single pulls to bring them home and try them out in your kitchen is an affordable; foolproof way to make sure you’ll love the change.

Backsplash: Changing your backsplash can instantly bring an outdated kitchen into 2016. Have fun with it! Your backsplash is a chance to choose unique patterns, colors, and textures.

Get your home ready for spring with these non-cleaning related to-dos.

Spring is officially here! Now that the season is underway, it’s time to get your house ready for it. Fear not, cleaning haters! We’re not talking about giving your home a deep scrub (though it’s not a bad idea). Here are a few things you should do to get your home ready for this spring.

- Welcome spring to your “door” by spending a little time sprucing it up. A fresh coat of paint, a new knocker, and/or new numbers can transform your home’s entrance. If you really want to wow this spring think about investing in a beautiful new Entry Door. Pair it with a welcome mat and some pretty planters.

- Get out your gardening gear and put a little time in getting your outdoor areas spring-ready. Lay fresh mulch and plant new annuals in bright colors. You can also use shrubs to hide problem spots around your house (e.g. propane tanks, AC units).

- Make sure all of your outdoor lights are functioning. If you have any burnt-out bulbs, switch them out for eco-friendlier CFL or LED options.

- Give your walkways some love. Winter is hard on them, so take the time to clean and repair them.

- Get your outdoor furniture ready. Clean it off and give it a fresh coat of paint. Consider replacing your cushions if they’re looking a little worn, too.

Is your house ready to welcome spring? If you want to make it easier to (literally!) open your doors to the new season, AG Millworks can help with our custom patio doors, entry doors, and windows that allow you to fully enjoy luxurious indoor-outdoor living. Whether you’re looking for your ideal entry doors, Bi-Fold patio doors, lift and slide patio doors, or multi-slide patio doors for your home, you simply need to click the Match Me With A Dealer button to get started!

Glimpse into the (not so distant) future of 3D printing for Building & Design

The same way the computer enhanced photography and graphic (2D) design, 3D printing looks to have a powerful impact in the world of architecture and building as it allows for structures and parts to be created at the touch of a button. Developed by American engineer Chuck Hull, the technology used laser light to form solid shapes from polymers. 3D printing can now utilize a range of materials from concrete to wood or bamboo with some architects and designers starting to utilize smaller printers in their studios to aid in the creative process.

Seemingly, the possibilities for 3D printing are endless….It may, someday, even help build entire skyscrapers.

1. China takes it the extreme.

China and ingenuity come hand-in-hand. It should come to no surprise that the largest 3D printed structure was printed there. Designed by architects Xu Feng and Yu Lei, Vulcan (the structure, not the Star Trekkian planet) stands at 9.4 feet tall, and 27 feet across. Even though it’s the largest 3D printed object in existence, it also shows the size limitations of 3D printing–at this point in time.

2. A Dutch Full House (Not starring Bob Saget)

Architects in Holland are currently constructing a canal house made from 80 percent bioplastics. This renewable/sustainable project is set to be finished by 2017, and will be using much less raw material than its other canal house brethren.

3. Smart . . . Buildings?

That’s right: buildings that can adjust their structure on their own. These buildings would adjust appropriately to the climate without the need for mechanical or digital interference, emulating nature with the idea of things adapting to changing conditions – just look at pinecones – once they fall to the ground they change shape by opening their scales to release their seeds.

4. Pioneers Wanted

3D is currently in its infancy, and we are still trying to comprehend all of the benefits it has to offer…from less pollution to eventually taking a fraction of what it takes to construct modern buildings. Currently, many of the materials that it takes to construct safe buildings are not yet able to be printed, but this technology seems to be the threshold of a new era and we can wait to see what’s next!

Innovative design is the cornerstone of AG Millwork’s products. Whether you’re looking for Bi-fold Patio Doors, Multi-slide Patio Doors or Lift and Slide Patio Doors for your home, look no further. Simply click the Match Me With A Dealer button to get started!

Tips to Help Natural Light Reach Your Home
Tuesday, February 23 2016

Open Your Home and Outlook with Unique Windows, Bi-fold Patio or French Doors.

Research supports the positive effect of natural light on human health. Human beings, and all life for that matter, evolved with the sun and depend on it to function optimally. In architecture, natural light refers to the power of the sun illuminating the desired room to the visual standard of those within—usually by adding a wall of glass doors or large windows that allow those light waves to bounce throughout the space. Here are three tips to consider helping optimize natural light in your home:

- Opening a wall with Bi-fold windows, Bi-fold patio doors or Lift and Slide patio doors or adding large custom windows can be an effective way to illuminate the rooms in your home making them feel larger and more spacious.

- Positioning is important too. If you enjoy the sun’s kiss in the morning, then you might want to think about adding French Doors to you bedroom and make sure they are appropriately sized and face towards the east. Morning sun increases your serotonin and vitamin D levels that help give you that morning boost!

- Room accents, paint color and finishes can play a bigger role in the daylighting process than you may think.  Using mirrors to reflect light, paint colors to boost the glow and luminous accent finishes can allow for incoming natural light to bounce around the room maximizing it’s effects.

Installing the proper doors and windows is essential to satisfy your physical and aesthetic needs for natural lighting. 2. Grape Hyacinth. Blooms mid-March – Violet clusters of small grape-shaped pedals bloom from their stem. It’s not hard to see how they got the name grape hyacinth.
  3. Tinka Tulip. Blooms late March – Like something out of “The Wizard of Oz” these red and yellow flowers bring joy to any who take a glance. They look great with the grape hyacinths, and look best when planted en masse.
  4. Golden Dawn Daffodils. Blooms early April – One bulb will produce two or three blooms from its receptacle. Nature’s photograph of the sun: with yellow petals with a golden center, these are sure to make any garden the center of any block’s attention.
  5. Byzantine Gladiolus. Blooms late April – An almost fluorescent magenta seemingly glows from these sword-like petals. Their stalks are strong and form in large clumps.

Product Highlight: Add Some Elegance to Your Home with French Patio Doors!
Tuesday, February 09 2016

French Patio Doors can update the look of your house in an instant.

Can you think of anything more charming than opening a set of French patio doors and letting a soft breeze flow through your house? Neither can we! Adding a set of French Patio Doors to your home can help create a classic, enchanting look.

As an alternative to traditional sliding doors, French patio doors open up fully to provide a larger opening to your outdoor space, allowing you to enjoy indoor outdoor living more seamlessly. Even when closed, they permit natural light to cascade into your home so you can enjoy the outdoors throughout the seasons.

Adding three or four sets of French patio doors along a long wall that is adjacent to your patio can help to open up the space and add an elegant look. French doors can also be the perfect option if you are looking to convert your garage and open it up to the outdoors by replacing the garage door.

If you are thinking that your only option is a “traditional” French door look, think again! Our French patio doors are custom made, allowing you to pick the style, size and materials that will enrich with the character of your home. Simulated or true divided lites, sidelites or a transom can be added to enhance the style. Quality security locks provide you with the protection that you need without compromising the design of the doors, too.

These tips can get your house looking its best for 2016.

There is no better way to start the New Year than with a clean, organized home. To help get you on the right track, keep these home cleaning and organizing tips in mind.

Create a dedicated space for all your cleaning essentials. The area under the kitchen sink has long been the most common place to keep your cleaning products. Unfortunately, that can makes it difficult to stay organized and find what you need. Rolling storage or portable caddy options work perfectly for cleaning supply storage and can be easily moved to the area you are cleaning.

Buy the right products. When shopping for cleaning products buy ones that multi-task and have scents that you like. If a product is effective and you like the way it smells, you will be much more likely to use it and your whole home will feel more fresh and pleasant.

Wipe down your bathroom each night. Keep biodegradable, disposable wipes under your bathroom sink and give all surfaces a quick wipe down before you go to bed. Not only will it allow you to enjoy a clean bathroom every morning, but it will also ensure your bathroom is always fresh in case of an unexpected guest.

Make your bed every morning. Making the bed before you leave the house in the morning is not only a great start to the day, it’s one of the easiest ways to feel better about your home. Having a tidy bed will draw your eye away from other aspects of your home that you may have not had the time to clean or organize quite yet and give you neat, calm place to come home to at the end of your day.

Cleaning and organizing your home is a great start! And maybe it is also time for an update. Follow these tips to help keep your remodeling projects on track!

Taking on a remodeling project can be daunting. From living in a construction zone to making sure you stick to your budget, there are many factors to worry about. To help your project run as smoothly as possible, begin with these tips:

1. Work with a qualified designer, architect and builder.

Unless you have a design background and construction expertise, bringing your vision to life can be harder than you think. A designer can help you figure out the right materials, doors, windows, and cabinets that will work best in your space. An architect will meld the design of the project with the building systems. A trusted professional builder will make sure your construction is done correctly and efficiently.

2. Establish your objectives.

Whether you want to open up your home, add more square footage, or upgrade your home’s assets, start by recognizing your goals. If you run into any problems during the project, referring back to your original objectives will help you figure out what route to take to solve the issue.

3. Set a budget, then add 10 percent.

It is not uncommon for remodeling projects to go over budget, especially due to unforeseen requirements or if you need to make design or material changes. Planning ahead and having some cushion will help you stick to your budget.

4. Know how your property will be protected.

Since your personal property will still be in your home, you want to make sure it and non-construction areas will be protected. Talk with your contractor to see what steps will be taken to safeguard your possessions and the parts of your house that are not having work done.

One of the most important parts of taking on a remodel project is choosing quality materials that will match your vision and last for years to come.
