February has come at last, and though we’re still experiencing some chilly temps here in Ventura, California, we can’t help but think about the warmer days ahead. We are eager for sunny days and warmer weather so we can really enjoy the outdoors. As outdoor living continues to gain popularity this year, we noticed some design trends that will shape the outdoor lifestyle movement in 2020.
| Folding Glass Door SystemsThe biggest trend right now that is taking the home design industry by storm is the folding door system. These doors are unique, innovative, and stylish, and can transform any space into an indoor/outdoor entertainment area. They enhance views and make walls disappear, leaving behind a smooth transition between inside and out. This connection of indoor and outdoor living spaces acts as an extension of the home and creates extra space for living, dining, and entertaining.
| Kitchen Passthrough WindowAnother outdoor living trend that’s hot in 2020 is the kitchen passthrough window. The best architects, designers, and builders are featuring folding kitchen passthrough windows in their custom residential home designs to add unique design elements to their projects. The folding window acts as a server passthrough, from kitchen to outdoor living area. This makes serving food and entertaining on the patio or deck effortless. The passthrough window also doubles as an outdoor breakfast bar which can be used as additional dining space, or a buffet or bar counter.
| Fire FeatureFire features are BIG in 2020. Fire pits and fireplaces are no longer just for keeping warm—they are used to enhance outdoor designs and create the perfect atmosphere for relaxing and entertaining. Landscape designers are taking fire features to an impressive level and creating dual fire/water features, massive fire pits, and cozy fireplaces. 4 | Outdoor KitchensOutdoor kitchens are IN! As homeowners are spending more time relaxing, dining, and entertaining outdoors, the convenience of an outdoor kitchen is trending. Home designers are moving on from the basic barbecue areas and creating elaborate outdoor kitchen designs by including stovetops, ovens, sinks, refrigerators, and pizza ovens in their outdoor kitchen plans.
| Outdoor Media RoomOutdoor Media RoomYou might notice a theme here—many commonly indoor rooms are making their way outdoors. The outdoor media room is a must-have in 2020! TVs and projection screens are incorporated into outdoor designs to create a media space where homeowners can enjoy an outdoor movie night, host sports viewing parties, or watch casually while lounging by the pool.
| Sliding Door SystemsThough not quite as popular as folding glass doors, sliding doors are making a comeback. Sliding doors allow homeowners to expand their living space and connect it to the outside. These doors create large openings and expose the entire home to an open-air lifestyle. Some sliding doors disappear completely from view and pocket inside a wall. 7 | Conversation PitsOne trend that we are seeing a lot of this year is the conversation pit. A conversation pit is a sunken sitting area where people can gather, relax, and connect with each other. Conversation pits are often built around a fire feature and have comfortable cushioned seating creating a relaxing and cozy atmosphere.
| Geometric PoolsPool designers have strayed from the rounded, kidney-shaped pool styles of the 1960s, and have adopted a more modern design. Geometric pools offer contemporary lines and sleek designs that create a modernized style.
| Elaborate PergolasLarge pergolas or outdoor coverings are growing in popularity. As more time is spent outdoors, the need for a shaded area protected from the elements has grown. Designers are incorporating elaborate pergolas with innovative shading technology and custom light features into outdoor living spaces. The pergola acts as a focal point and central area where you can relax, dine, and entertain.
